Jehovah's Witnesses Who Were JWs Before 1984- A Question For You?
For all the non-JWs who’ve rushed here thinking 1984 was another "1975" (lol)- that was the year the current songbook "Sing Praises to Jehovah" was released. There’s your little tidbit for the day.

Now for the JWs who know what Vot is talking about:
When I was studying the Bible back in 2001, the sister I was studying with (or is it "the sister who was studying with me"? Anyways…) gave me a cassette with about 37 songs on them- vocals. Oh how I loved those songs! (I still love them- they form the core of the songs I know completely by heart to this day) Anyways, after being in the truth a few years I kept asking around for more of those vocals, so I could learn more songs by heart without having to hold the songbook.

Every time I asked the brother in charge of literature for more "Sing Praises to Jehovah" CDs, he’d bring me the "Kingdom Melodies" (instrumental). I would say "No, I want the one with the voices!!" and everyone said they didn’t know what Vot was talking about. One brother mentioned that he’s never seen more than one "vocal" CD. I said that was impossible- we had 225 songs, why only have one "vocal" CD of only 37???

Now I think I understand- were these 37 the "new" songs that were introduced into the- at the time i.e 1984- "new" songbook? Are these 37 songs the equivalent of the brand new songs in the "Sing to Jehovah" (2009) songbook- the only ones that are available as vocal renditions as found on www.jw.org and on CD and cassette?

Because even now there is only the one CD :-D
Abernathy- >:-P

Rick G- Indeed, that CD had different singing styles, and since Vot is like a parrot when it comes to singing, I sing real low (well, as low as my female voice can go lol) on those songs where a brother sings solo, and I sing real high if the sisters do so too. I can never do "my own thing" when it comes to singing lol

2Q&Learn- True. Kind of like what I wondered when the Isaiah’s Prophecy Vol 1 was released :-D

Debbie & Wendi- Thanks for that walk down memory lane :)
Adam’s Rib: A complete set of the 225 songs with vocals? Vot wants it!!!

You could have condensed that to, like, 3 sentences.

I only remember the one CD too.

I think the issue is that while it was "enjoyable", it took a lot of planning and effort to produce that CD. It was "nice" but music is not really the focus of our ministry. And we have plenty of times that we can hear the music "live". (Personally, the most beautiful sound I remember is being at a convention with 40,000 voices singing, especially song 171)

If I remember right, the CD had the music in various formats, a couple were done with just one singer.

Our OLD songbook, pre-1984, also had a record with the brothers singing about 15 of the kingdom songs. It seems to be a pattern, of only one vocal. Maybe with the newer recording skills, we might get more…

As I remember the speaker said the purpose of the new songs and the changes in some of the old ones, was to make them easier for us to remember, both the message of the song and to be able to sing them ourselves from memory, like when we are traveling or worse, when we face a time like Paul and Silas, being locked in jail.
